RE: Drew Talbot - Devongone - 12-05-2017 I'm not optimistic, because we are so unlike Mr Caldwell's previous managerial experience. We talk blithely about giving him 10 games to see how is getting on, but that means the end of September. Not long is it? With Wigan, with all their resources and a chairman who existed, wasn't selling and was supportive, after ten games he had them in 9th place having a 4-3-3 record (including beating us 2-3!). After 2 games they were 23rd, imagine us on that start on top of this season. He didn't get them into an automatic promotion position until match day 32 and they didn't go top till game 40. So, how and when do we judge, is halfway after ten games okay? How many teams get relegated after being halfway after ten games, how many managers end up sacked? And at the moment we have only a record of 2 wins in 19 games to go on, a much worse record than his predecessor ........... do we take that into account when looking at GC's record after 10 games, or can next season be a clean slate in fans' heads? At Wigan from July 1st 2015 Mr Caldwell transferred in 20 players and got rid of 18. Of the 20 transfers he spent a known £1,050,000 on two players and there were 10 other undisclosed fees. Of the 18 going out of Wigan he received £1,500,000 and 10 undisclosed fees. His dealings were clearly successful, but WE can only sell our family jewels - our youngsters - and cannot afford fees, or high wages, to attract proven free agents - it's chalk and cheese. Even Mr Caldwell's loan dealings weren't reminiscent of us. At Wigan he was able to loan out 13 players and loan in 11. Wigan with Sharpe/Whelan money were a whole different ball game to Chesterfield. So far there isn't much to be optimistic about. Caldwell's team apparently pass the ball about nicely, but that doesn't result in them shooting, or even stopping goals ........ We've ditched some players and kept some, whether they were the right ones is up for debate. We sold our most obvious asset cheap, because we daren't let his value fall further on the back of another failing season. In addition I remain baffled that our best youngster in the last two seasons is the only young player who can't get a first team game. When we hit a transfer window our dealings were completely shambolic. Team selection seemed pretty random and experienced players were open in their bafflement over what was expected of them on the pitch ......... And all this was being played out against a backdrop of a club in financial crisis so deep that the "owner" is attempting to sell at a wholly unrealistic price, a Chief Executive who was first moved then sacked, a ragged rump of a Board halved by departures and an administration so lax that player contracts cannot even be located. Reasons to be cheerful? Over to you Ian Dury 1-2-3. RE: Drew Talbot - bluepooch - 12-05-2017 I know Im in the minority here but I reckon the much maligned January loanees will turn out to be decent .Faupala ,Grimshaw and Kakay will certainly hack it at League One level if not higher.I do accept though that perhaps we were the wrong club at the wrong time . Dave Allen has stumped up 30k of his own money for the Spain trip so he has to be given some credit for this . One thing that has annoyed me tonight is the fact that its taken Chris Wilder to confirm the Brooks signing. Why havent the club announced it or even Carson on his twitter feed ,he needs to try to stop being clever and gives us the news as it happens and stop trying to tease . RE: Drew Talbot - Dancingwilldoit - 13-05-2017 Dan Gardner obviously feels as confident as the rest of us (or some Blue) bailed out rejecting contract. RE: Drew Talbot - bluepooch - 13-05-2017 Dancing ,like any other contract offers its all speculation as to how much he is on or how much he was offered. He may have had a better offer elsewhere ,if its true then you cant blame him . RE: Drew Talbot - Devongone - 14-05-2017 Pooch you are right about the lack of a Brooks announcement. I'm still like those EU Remainers, I'm hoping it won't happen! I'm afraid Mr Allen's £30,000 only adds to the confusion about what is going on. I don't believe his every impulse is evil. But it doesn't help. We don't know whether he is walking away, running, or staying where he is. This is £30,000 muddying the waters. It doesn't stop us looking like a club in crisis to any decent player considering whether to sign. I don't believe all GC's loanees were rubbish, but their contribution was. They were youngsters almost without EFL experience dropped into a crisis club, with a new manager, who were expected to turn a losing team around. And start doing it within a couple of days. No wonder they failed. By the time they might have been settled we were already going to be as good as down. Stir in the desperation of knowing that their careers might be on the line when they returned to their clubs .............. and a dissatisfied crowd ......... couldn't we have found a few more elements to make it difficult? That's what was wrong with GC's recruitment, not the potential ability of the players. RE: Drew Talbot - bluepooch - 14-05-2017 We are 16/1 with Skybet for next season, about halfway finish then .The favourites are ........Mansfield . I'm hoping the bookies are wrong for a change but they obviously have us at that price for a reason . RE: Drew Talbot - Dancingwilldoit - 15-05-2017 Now if they were odds for going down I would risk a pound or 2. If only Mansfield were favorites for the drop that would make things a bit better. I honestly cant see Steve Evans staying there long. There are already rumors about Swindon and what odds would you give on a return to Rotherham if they don't have a good start? He is undoubtedly punching above his weight at Mansfield and I would take a punt on him on as our next manager. He certainly knows how to get the best out of bang average players and has a spark about him even if he rubs others up the wrong way and has a dubious history. RE: Drew Talbot - Devongone - 15-05-2017 Oh Dancing! If there was one thing could convince me into the GC camp big time, it would be the alternative of Steve (pttttaaahhhhh!) Evans as our manager. We could go the whole hog and promise President Assad safe passage from Syria if he took over. Or maybe Robert Mugabe could see out his final years in football management. There's enough dodgy about Chesterfield without adding Steve Evans to the mix. "Dubious", are you going for Matt's coveted "King of Understatement" title? RE: Drew Talbot - Dancingwilldoit - 15-05-2017 Dev, I did say it half in jest but thinking about it more he may be ideal. He would be a shoehorn with our current owner that's for sure, but you cant deny that he must have something on the footballing side. He did absolute wonders with Rotherham on a limited budget and has more than a few promotions under his belt during his career. Like him or loathe him he doesn't mince his words and would shake up our remaining players into some kind of team. At least there would be something more tangible in the brown paper bags rather than the sick feeling most of the fans have been carrying around in them this last season. RE: Drew Talbot - Devongone - 15-05-2017 Dancing, I can only suggest you see your own posting, Threats. Hitler was having some success with running the the trains on time, till he directed them to Auschwitz .......... Steve Evans is the best thing to happen to Mansfield since Roy Lynk. You pay a price for promotion. Steve Evans is too high a price for me. |
