RE: The FA cup thread - Statesideowl - 04-02-2015 Pies are shit and as SCO said, Bacon is a bit pants too. American chocolate isn't very good and most of the general store food is cheap and processed. ( wal mart etc) However, for a bit more money you can get just about anything you want from most of the yuppie whole foods shops. I order my bacon and sausages online from a Brit butcher over in Carolina, they cure the pork like we do back home. The yanks remove the skin in the abattoir so there's no nice fatty bacon or nice rind on roasts for crackling Other than that there's just about every food you could possibly imagine here, and then imagine that food stuffed into other food and again, stuffed into something else. I need to drive in to Tulsa every time I want a curry though. RE: The FA cup thread - St Charles Owl - 04-02-2015 One of the benefits of moving to California is the amount of Indian Restaurants over here!! Big Indian population here for some reason so we get our curry fix whenever we want now. Yes, the lack of a skin on a pork roast is annoying, but I suppose it is healthier!! The key here, just like in Britain, is to find a good local butcher, if you tell them what you want they can usually get it, but there are so few left these days unfortunately!! Back to talking about pigs, I have never been able to find pork pie over here, boy I miss those!! There is an importer in Buffalo, NY, but I refuse to pay the high prices he charges to make and ship them!! RE: The FA cup thread - Thurnscoe_OWL - 04-02-2015 Can you get sausage rolls and pasties? RE: The FA cup thread - St Charles Owl - 04-02-2015 Not in the supermarkets. I found a great British Pastie store in San Luis Obispo that makes traditional cornish pasties as well as some other inventive flavours, but not found them anywhere else. Sausage rolls I have tried to make, but finding a traditional English sausage to put in them is difficult, so I just have to go without!! My local supermarket is now selling British Pork Bangers and we buy those a lot so they are getting there with it all. Still doesn't alter the fact that the pigs lost tonight!!! ![]() RE: The FA cup thread - Statesideowl - 04-02-2015 Get pasties and sausage rolls from the butcher when I order some other meats, they make their own in house. The pastry is just right too, it's nice when you can get that little slice of home from time to time. The missis even learned how to make scotch eggs ![]() It's always good to try new things though, I didn't think I'd like half the stuff out here that I've tasted over the years, and now some of it is my favourite! RE: The FA cup thread - St Charles Owl - 04-02-2015 Scotch eggs are something I would make if I could get good sausage meat, but generally we just end up going without. As Stateside said, you start off missing things from home, then if you are adventurous you discover new things and replace the ones you miss. I make a mean Italian Beef, something popular in Chicago, and we slow cook that every couple of weeks!! RE: The FA cup thread - Thurnscoe_OWL - 04-02-2015 i am coming to america for some proper meats ![]() RE: The FA cup thread - St Charles Owl - 04-02-2015 (04-02-2015, 03:04)Thurnscoe_OWL Wrote: i am coming to america for some proper meats I love the deli's in NYC but there are a ton of great restaurants in the city, even in the tourist areas there are good ones. I know the city fairly well if you want some advice on what to do and where to stay. RE: The FA cup thread - Thurnscoe_OWL - 04-02-2015 Cheers Charlie, I will bear you in mind if I get anything booked ![]() RE: The FA cup thread - peiowl - 04-02-2015 You lot. If I were doing the next thread I'd muppett the whole lot of you. Read: "FA CUP thread." Not: "nattering nosh thread." ![]() Go talk about your meat and potato pies and black puddings on the proper thread. ![]() You're muppetts and you need some time in the ML to think about your sins. ![]() |
