RE: Match Thread - Brentford - madsteve - 15-04-2015 Difficult game to sum up because we won but were massively outplayed by a team of ordinary players playing out of their skins. However, they squandered so many chances and we took one of our few chances. We actually started quite brightly but Brentford quickly adjusted their formation to take control. In many ways, we played it like an away match by taking the pressure and counter attacking. Brentford missed three good chances in the first half but we got to the break level. The amazing four against one situation where they contrived to miss! As the match progressed, it became more stretched as Brentford committed more men forward. It looked like it was inevitable that they were going to score but we kept holding on somehow. After bringing on Bus, Maguire & Maghoma, we scored in a remarkable break away. We ended up four versus two. Lee slipped it to Lavery. He tried to set us Bus but the ball broke perfectly to Lee, who smashed it home. After that, Brentford appeared to be less confident. They missed one sitter but otherwise we saw time out comfortably with Maguire expertly running down the clock. Westwood - 6 - couple of saves Buxton - 6 - less involved than Saturday Lees - 7 - individually solid Zayatte - 6 - won aeriel battles Helan - 6 - struggled at times Lee - 7 - bright & inventive McGugan - 5 - below par Melo - 7 - outstanding shield Isgrove - 6 - less influential May - 5 - didn't happen Lavery - 6 - bright & inventive ................................................ Maguire - 7 - managed to use up four minutes of stoppage time on his own Bus - 6 - looked more cohesive with him on Maghoma - 6 - one brilliant saving tackle I said three matches ago that it was about preparing for next season, about trying things and that performances were more important now than results. So here, our performance was poor. We were constantly cut open and probably deserved to lose by two or three goals. On the plus side, we hung in there, scored a goal and saw the game out professionally. Not sure that we learnt much here that we didn't already know. May & Lavery together don't work as a pair. Helan is vulnerable at LB. maybe home fans saw that Melo is quality. I think this match posed more questions regarding the retained list though. Maguire has looked better in the last two matches so could save himself. Melo's performance cast a greater shadow over Semedo, who has been blighted with injuries although SG's criticism of Melo after the match suggests that he won't be playing him regularly. I would also add that the game was entertaining compared to most of the matches this season. That was helped by Brentford's desire to win by leaving three men upfield throughout the second half. We are now one clean sheet away from a new club record but also face a less wanted record of this being the first season in our history that we have never scored more than two in any home match unless we score three or more against Leeds. From memory, we did that last season. ![]() RE: Match Thread - Brentford - Thurnscoe_OWL - 15-04-2015 I think, regarding the Melo situation, that we'll keep semedo. If we are serious about promotion then there will be a use for Melo, Hutch and Semedo when we play away against those at the top for example or in a 451 or when we need to defend a lead Maguire I'd keep maybe 2 years as back up time waster ![]() Mattock I'd keep 2 years because I think he's our best LB Zayatte and Loovens keep for a year but get another younger CB to push for start Lee keep for 2 years with option of 1 more Floro keep 3 years he's still young but needs to be pushing for starts (not hard considering we have to choose from Helan ![]() ![]() Buxton can go Kelhar can go Maghoma can go if we have replacements (yes 2 new wingers at least) in place Kirkland can leave McCabe can go we have to be getting players in who are better than those we are keeping though RE: Match Thread - Brentford - Towinjustonce - 15-04-2015 MS what was SG's criticism with Melo. Delighted we won but I now think that will keep SG his job. RE: Match Thread - Brentford - Kimmyowl - 16-04-2015 I'm a little surprised at your ratings MS, I thought we were excellent against Brentford, they are in good form and are chasing a play off spot whereas we have no real goal other than professionalism and as high a finish as possible. We were always going to have to defend, but we countered and used the ball very well at times and had we used the final ball better we could've scored more, The way we went at the job, had it finished 0-0 I would've come away thinking what a great game despite no goals, in reality it could've been 4-4, I was buoyed by our performance and the win was a massive bonus, I hope we play the same v Bournemouth, granted they will probably be more clinical than Brentford, but I saw some good things Tuesday. Westwood - 7- couple of good saves Buxton - 7- best full back performance of the season, if fit still our best RB Lees - 7 - individually solid Zayatte - 8- Absolute rock, if he could pass we'd have a cracking player Helan - 6 - Sublime to the ridiculous in the blink of an eye Lee - 7 - bright & inventive McGugan - 6-one of those nights where the effort was there if not the form Melo - 8- oozed quality and a real composure about him Isgrove - 7- worked tirelessly May - 6-better than of late Lavery - 7-on the front foot and always looking to get involved ................................................ Maguire - 8- unsure why he didn't start. Excellent Saturday and same Tuesday Bus - 7-proper centre forward , held the ball up really well and linked play, needs to be fitter Maghoma - 6 - came on and looked to get involved SG -8- got it right, we were always gonna be pushed back so we countered, spot on. My average performance rating is 6. I gave more above six than below it so I rate the players overall as above average. Brentford had ten really good opportunities but only got one on target. On another day, we could have lost 5-1. If Brentford had taken the lead, the match would have changed with them defending in numbers and we would have faced our usual problems. As it was, it was an entertaining match but our defence was cut apart so easily that it bodes badly for next season unless we can improve the defence. RE: Match Thread - Brentford - Thurnscoe_OWL - 16-04-2015 Our defence is so vulnerable with Helan LB because he doesn't have a footballing brain and is constantly out of position, stretching the rest of the defence and creating gaps. People seem to love Helan though because he has pure pace and then hate Mattock despite him being better in the tackle, better with the ball at feet and better at marking players. I've seen Mattock get slated recently (cardiff game in particular) because he's apparently cost us goals in the air. My question would be; why do we have a 5'10 LB marking 6'6 forwards? RE: Match Thread - Brentford - Kimmyowl - 16-04-2015 I get what you're saying MS but that's discounting our chances too, we created enough chances to win 3 games, if we had a natural scorer I think we'd be above them in the table RE: Match Thread - Brentford - Thurnscoe_OWL - 16-04-2015 if we had a goalscorer and proper winger we'd be nearer the top 2 RE: Match Thread - Brentford - madsteve - 16-04-2015 (16-04-2015, 13:33)Kimmyowl Wrote: I get what you're saying MS but that's discounting our chances too, we created enough chances to win 3 games, if we had a natural scorer I think we'd be above them in the table If we hadn't sold Antonio, we would be top six. That will be SG's legacy - May for Antonio. RE: Match Thread - Brentford - consilio - 16-04-2015 We've created chances to win games all season. It's the quality CF we've missed rather than Antonio. |
