The difficult one is Zohore, still young on high wages to get him out we will have to subsidise his wages. Just my thoughts for me I would want to play.

I'm in a similar boat to you, If I was a pro, I'd rather play and get paid a lower salary. Especially, as you suggest, it's not going to be a poorper salary in the Championship.

But from knowing someone who works in the game, I've realised some professionals can be different. Some still want to play, but there are plenty who are just taking the money. Either because they have fell out of love with the game, don't like football and are merely mercenaries or have pressure from WAGs to just earn as much as they can. Let's face it, the typical footballers wife is just there for the cash.

So I think it depends on individuals. Hopefully ours are the type who still love the game and will encourage a move.

Of course wages would be a problem. If your earning £100K a week you buy bigger houses - super cars - holiday homes.
They don't live in the same world as a normal person. We all live to our means.
Remember this is a job for them and they have a limited time to maximise their earnings.
Imagine if your weekly wage was cut in half, are you saying in you had £1/2 million in the bank you like to take a pay cut - NO NO NO .

Sorry blue cannot agree the players were talking about are multi millionaires. Just check out the car park. There cars are worth more than some houses, yes they can afford to take a drop in wages.Krovinovic has just proved that by paying the rent on an apartment which he wasn’t living in, in Birmingham and good luck to him. The players I’m talking about have had decent career’s on high wages if they want to continue playing they will take a drop otherwise they are just taking up squad places with no game time and I don’t believe they want that.

You don't end up a multi millionaire by accepting pay cuts my friend. Me or you don't live like they do, it's difficult for normal people to
understand why they need money and will never move clubs for less money. No footballer does - even the richest players dont take pay cuts.
Some could afford to play for free Messi, Bale, Ronaldo for example. But no they want more and more.
Bale has just moved back to Spurs - Real Madrid pay £330K a week and Spurs £220K a week. He's a multi-multi millionaire but did he take a pay cut? no chance.
Even if they don't need or want the money personally they will give it away, but they will never take a pay cut.

I don't think it's as black and white as you are making out.

Yes, there are a lot of players who are greedy and would rather sit on the bench than take a pay cut and play somewhere else. But there are some who would, the love of the game isn't completely dead.

But I think you're right that most care more about the pay packet. But there are a few exceptions...

In the not too distant past, Joseba Etxeberria played his final season for Athletico Bilbao for free, just because he loved the club.

I would also say most players that drop from the Premier League to Championship take a pay cut. It's likely Charlie Austin took a pay cut when he signed for us. The signing on bonus probably softened the blow.

These players will remain multi-millionaires even in the Championship. I mean if a Prem player on £40k drops to the Championship and earns £20k, that's still over £1m per year. That's not taking into account signing on fee, bonuses for goals, chean sheets, promotion and the like. Players in the Championship are not on chump change.

But I appreciate most are so embroiled in a life of overspending on crap like casino trips and that the pay packet becomes more important than the game.

RE: 2020 Summer Transfer Window - 21st September - St Charles Owl - 30-09-2020

I'm with Blue on this one. Players have short careers in comparison to the rest of us but as stated earn a heck of alot more, but as Blue said that affords them a lifestyle that we can only dream of but still needs to be maintained. Charlie Austin is a classic case of this, he was reportedly on 100k a week at Southampton, moved to you guys and is reportedly on 70k a week, so he did take a cut to get game time. But there was only 2-3 clubs in the Championship that could afford to do that deal, those on parachute payments, so his marketability in the Championship is very limited because of his wages. The average wage in the Championship is 29k/week and while I would expect Austin to be higher than that its reasonable to say the most he is likely to get form other teams in the Championship is 40-50k/week. So if he was to do that he would be taking a 50% pay cut over what he was on a year ago. I believe his contract runs out after next season, so he can either sit it out on the bench for you guys and earn 7m or move to another championship club and cut that by 3m or so, a lot of players will not take that hit unless they are forced to.

Of course if he can get a move to a PL club, its a completely different story where the average wage is over 10 times that of the Championship!!! But I think the Championship is probably his level now anyway.

It depends on the player really regarding their lifestyle and costs of maintenance. You get some like Obafemi Martins who when he was at Newcastle and was on £80k per week and in debt. But others might be a bit more sensible with their cash. Realistically, Premier League Players should have millions in the bank, paid off all homes and cars, have a property portfolio and investments. If the average Championship wage is £29k (admittedly, this is higher than I thought) that's £1.5m per year. If a player with no expenses can't live comfortably on that, they have made some pretty bad decisions in life.

For me as a football lover, it's unthinkable to become a professional and be "happy" sitting on the bench just to become 'more' of a millionaire.

It's what we call in normal the regular world the work life balance.

But I think the reality is a lot of footballers for whatever reason (social media scrutiny or abuse perhaps) have lost their love of the game. They don't actually care about playing at all. And that's why it's not a trade off between playing and cash - it's simply about cash and nothing more. Blue mentioned Gareth Bale earlier and he's a prime example, as he's openly admitted preferring to play golf.

But I do still hold hope that some professional players hold the same love for the game that I do.

RE: 2020 Summer Transfer Window - 21st September - wba13 - 30-09-2020

Rumours going round Grant not our number one target, and there could be two strikers incoming in the next few days. They say get ready for surprises I have no idea if these rumours are true but I like surprises and a good end to the transfer window. Let’s wait for the fun of transfer day. Remember after Monday we can only deal with teams from the EFL for 10 days, so any premiership or foreign deals have to be done by Monday 11 pm.

RE: 2020 Summer Transfer Window - 21st September - Blue Baggie - 30-09-2020

I'm predicting. No Grant.
Sturridge on a pay as you play deal
And a Saido return.
Austin - Zohore - Phillips leave.

Angry
A bit of a non specific rant.
Looking at the BBC football 'transfer gossip /news,' or whatever it's called, almost all articles are involving absolutely obscene amounts of money for players that are honestly probably worth a tenth of the price quoted.
Bad enough, but in these times when the majority of REAL clubs have their backs to the wall, or even days away from going bust......

I know it's 'market forces' at work, but at the present time I really think that there should be some sort of worldwide football regulatory body set up to distribute monies in a fairer and more sensible way.
I'm sure that 95% of fans would support this, surely?

(..... and I'M certainly NOT an idealist/socialist in my political views!)

RE: 2020 Summer Transfer Window - 1st October - Blue Baggie - 01-10-2020

Could be worse I had someone trying to convince me Grant was our only option today.
He knows exactly how much he earns and how much we are going to pay him.
I don't believe it - I have found someone who knows more about football then anyone in fact.
He let the side down when he revealed his knowledge was based on research. That turned me into MR TICKLE.
