RE: WBA 2018/19 Xfer Window - (28 May) Championship Rebuild - Beefy 1965 - 01-06-2018

Why is everybody leaving
I know we got rid of some of the top brass, but seems we have another vacancy to fill as our doctor of 8 years has decided to join Forest Confused

Jonathan Leko has signed a new three-year contract at #wba. “I’m really happy to have signed this deal - I’ve been here since I was 10 and now I want to push on and get myself a regular first team place.”

I'd almost forgotten about him. He and Sam Field (and Burke) should be showing signs next season what they're made of.

Get those two Leko and Burke firing on all cylinders, there is not a defence in the Championship that could stop them, very few in the Premiership, if they were to play to their capabilities. I have always loved fast wingers, growing up watching Willie Johnston leave scorch marks up the left wing.

I agree 100% with that. Now we’ve dropped down a division we should definitely be looking at getting back to playing with proper fast wingers again. In my opinion we should offload McLean and then look at having 4 fast direct wingers; Phillips, Burke, Leko and a new signing. That way we can have a threat whichever tactics we use next season. Possession football with 2 fast outlets out wide to give us alternative attacking methods in the final third or direct counter-attack with 2 fast outlets out wide to exploit space left.

My choice for new signing is Julian Green from Stuttgart. He can be used as a left winger and as a number 10 (central winger). I’m sure Big Dave and Terraneo have their own options.

Love the term 'central winger' Josh - to us old buggers that's like hearing about an attacking goalkeeper Huh Big Grin Big Grin

In simple terms it's an attacking midfielder who drifts to wide positions to get into space and runs direct with the ball rather than playing as a class playmaker. Matt Phillips would be good for that role.

Have you ever heard of Jose Luis Chilavert? He was the definition of an attacking goalkeeper and used to take his team's free-kicks and penalties.

..."attacking midfielder who drifts to wide positions to get into space and runs direct with the ball"
....almost the exact definition of a(n old fashioned) winger!

Did the old fashioned winger start in a central position and then drift to the wing in your heyday drewks (1930’s Whistle)? If so then a modern day central winger is pretty much the same thing.

A good example would be Eden Hazard of Chelsea when Conte started playing Morata and Hazard as a duo in a 3-5-2 rather than the usual 3-4-3. Hazard would start in the centre of the pitch when Chelsea win the ball and then drift across towards the left half-space and left wing to find space. That is pretty much the trait of the central winger.

Let's hope that Sam Field follows Leko and signs a new contract. His current contract expires this month.
