RE: The Padded Cell - consilio - 07-10-2015 Atkinson built a side, much in the way that Clough did at Forest. Whilst I'm not saying Atkinson was in the same class as Clough, he certainly had his similarities. I'm certain we would have won the league over the next couple of years if he hadn't left for Villa. Francis came in and brought in some of our best ever players but couldn't quite get them into a side in the way Atkinson could. Those were the days....... RE: The Padded Cell - madsteve - 08-10-2015 We had the players under Atkinson to be a Top Three side but instead he got us relegated. Getting us promoted again was a gimme but it was winning the LC that gave Atkinson his legendary status. In truth, he badly underachieved in the league but getting relegated & promoted again gets more popularity than keeping a side up twice. These days, he would have been sacked for getting us relegated. His actual managerial achievements are behind those of Wilko & Jack. RE: The Padded Cell - Imre varadi - 08-10-2015 he would have been sacked these days its true !! but then he wouldnt have got us relegated would he !!! cos these days he would have been sacked long before ner ner ne ner ner !!!! RE: The Padded Cell - Maddix - 10-10-2015 And the football was a lot better under Wilko and Jack ![]() RE: The Padded Cell - Jacko The Flopsy Piglet - 11-10-2015 Saw my first game under big Jack and went to most of the home games in the Wilko promotion season. Teams definitely didn't like coming to Hillsborough when Wilko had us on the march. Great days! Must say, the football under Big Ron was great, although we didn't always get the results. I'm not sure we would have gone on to win the League if Ron had stayed. If you look at his record he was a great Cup manager and a nearly League manager. Wish it hadn't ended as acrimoniously as it did. RE: The Padded Cell - consilio - 11-10-2015 We'd certainly have had a better chance than under the joke managers that followed him!! RE: The Padded Cell - madsteve - 11-10-2015 Big Ron was a better manager than everyone that has followed him but not as good as the two that came before him - they both got us promoted without getting us relegated & both left us much higher placed than when they took over. RE: The Padded Cell - consilio - 11-10-2015 Never watched us under Charlton. Wilkinson was effective but the football was dire. My favourite manager by a distance. The promotion, cup win and he signed two of my favourite ever players, Palmer and Sheridan. I found the football under Wilkinson exciting. He had no budget for new players but got us punching well above our weight and threatening for the title. Big Ron & Trev were given money to spend but never moved us forward like Wilko did. Ok, Trev moved us forward a bit but he spent money achieving it but we ended up with an old side & needing to invest again to stand still. Certainly we played some good stuff under Ron but it was more show over substance in the league with one relegation & one relegation. Thankfully he got us a cup win, which will not be forgotten. RE: The Padded Cell - Maddix - 11-10-2015 I wouldn't say we were dire under Wilko. We played some fantastic stuff at times and hammered quite a few teams. I think the 'dire' myth has come about from the fact that he also knew how to win a few games 1-0 when we were not at the races and should have lost. And his after-match interview persona didn't help ![]() |
