RE: QPR Match Thread - Slick_Footwork - 06-04-2015 Was a really poor day at the office with too many players off form at the same time, coupled with QPR scoring a couple of great goals. I'd be surprised if Zamora scores another like that in his career... Don't think 4-1 was a fair reflection but still very poor. The whole midfield were terrible, with Garnder and Sess both shocking. Saido was the only decent player on the ball going forward and then missed that sitter at 3-1 which could've changed the game. Just about summed it up. Then you've got Mulumbu getting sent off to kill any last hopes. Don't think Pulis is to blame as the exact same midfield played so well at home in the last game. I don't agree with playing Baird though, especially at home. The guy just doesn't get forward enough to play full back anymore. Wisdom or Gamboa would've been better choices. The result probably wouldn't be much different though given the wholesale poor performances. Pressure is on next week now. We will need to be a lot better. Chris Ramsey (QPR manager) said it was a lot closer than 4-1 suggested. As you say, Berahino missed one sitter and the QPR goalie made some good saves. No excuses though, QPR were well worth their win. Unfortunately I think the Vile will turn them over with ease on Tuesday to edge to safety and our loss to QPR will have been in vain. RE: QPR Match Thread - betterthanbaird - 07-04-2015 Yeah Berahino missed that sitter and when I watched MOTD I realised how many chances Ideye had (loads) QPR had some good players but weren't particularly great overall. Saido seemed to have decent attack and showed his class on the ball at times but he kept slipping. Someone mentioned the midfield being terrible, the wingers were definitely but I thought Fletcher and Morrison were decent but the QPR midfield did probably get the better of them. The old adage applies here about Brown Ideye - goals win matches, and while a GK or a defender can be pilloried for making a single mistake to cost his team a goal and possibly a game, strikers win or lose matches by the chances they take or miss, in the process putting extra pressure on the defence not to concede. Not knocking Pulis overall, but if he can't get the best out of his players, ie putting them in the right frame of mind, massaging egos, playing the right players in their best, comfortable position, what DOES he do? It's no good him saying the players weren't showing enough fight/concentration etc, and "they've been reading too much Social Media comments saying they're safe". It's the Manager (Head Coach) job to fire them up, which Irvine clearly didn't - but Pulis is not doing it well enough either, based on some performances. Read this bit of Social Media: If you don't beat Leicester, you're going down with a great big salary drop. There''s every chance you'll get "NIL POINTS" from your last 5 games. And if your Head Coach can't liven you up for Saturday's match, he'll be down the road as well. Saturday we were not as good as we have been at home and maybe he can take his share of the blame for not motivating the players. But I thought there was a lot of elementary errors rather than lack of effort. Saturday's game was the realisation of the position we're in and more specifically, how poor our squad is. We had a second striker on the left wing and a very bog standard central midfielder on the right wing. Zero in the way of attacking options on the bench for these positions and because of that, the change to improve us meant putting our best striker into midfield. I think we've got a lot of mediocre players in our squad in our side such as Baird and Gardner who wouldn't look out of place in the championship. Sessegnon can be a world beater on his day but doesn't often perform from the wing while Ideye simply doesn't have anywhere near enough influence on the game. His overall contribution is comparable with Matej Vydra last season. I have no idea why we let Samaras and Varela both leave and only replace them with McManaman when we were already short on the wing. We definitely need to be better on Saturday and hopefully we will be. But the QPR game highlighted a bigger problem and showed that our excellent home performances against Swansea and Southampton were really just papering over the fact that we have a wafer thing squad that lacks top level quality. |
