Relegation - Is it a bad thing? - devwakey - 03-12-2014

Just talking with someone in the office (Swindon Fan) and it's made me think, would being relegated be such a bad thing?

We would be in a league where we can comfortably hold our own, wouldn't fear anyone, and stand a chance of winning every game?

I know the Premier League is seen as the Mecca of football, but I think now we have been in it a few years, and realise what our realistic ambitions will be, would it be the worst thing to have a taste of Championship football again?

Now I live in Yorkshire, so I used to love going to proper away days at stadiums like Rotherham/Sheff Utd/Barnsley etc...

This is just a thought, I am in no way hoping WBA lose every game and go down, just wondered if anyone else was starting to find the Premiership a bit tedious for us?

I would be distraught, but I'd enjoy it after a while. The away games would be great, and like you say we should be competing in every single game, and aiming for 3 points.

The only 2 HUGE drawbacks are:

1) We probably lose Sess / Varela / Berahino and maybe more. It's going to cost us 20m to replace those three, to get us to exactly the same spot (squad wise) that we are in now, and ended up getting relegated with.

2) Money. There's a massive gulf in money, and it makes the football world go round unfortunately. Especially now the TV rights have gone up, staying up last year enabled us to buy 10-11 new players, staying up again will mean we (SHOULD!) strengthen again. If we go down we could potentially go stagnant like Blues seem to have become.

I'd probably enjoy the football / atmoshpere / going to new away day places a lot more than I currently do though.

Simple answer is YES it would be.

Honestly, if we go down i cant see us recovering. Everyone bar the dead weights will leave and we will be in a really bad way.

So.....YES!

Looking more like the Mid Table Champioship club he thinks we are.

Afternoon All,
While the temptation of being able to contest each game and win a few now and then would be better than this continual feast of mediocrity, there are no guarantees that the "winning" aspect would necessarily return.
See what has happened to some of the mightiest clubs the 70's and 80's had to offer, such as Leeds United, Forest, Middlesborough, Wolverhampton Wanderers just a few to mention. They would sell their Grannies and offer their false teeth to be in our position.
It has got to such a point that the "magic" of the cup competitions is not what it was, as invariably, when the big sides do scent a whiff of a trophy, after paying the competition nil respect up until the semi final, the big teams go on and win it, especially the FA Cup, where the minnows fight for the right to play the "mighty", get a good payday, then shuffle back off to obscurity.
Money now rules, and most Premier league Chairmen know that going down is not going to earn them diddly, so either bankrupt the club in an effort to survive, or do not invest enough hoping somehow they can hang in there, and keep getting the paydays.

Fans and supporters are their own worst enemy in this, as while we keep paying the extortionate rates for tickets, merchandise, pies and pints, the powers that be will never try and return the game"to the grass roots", but will continue to pay homage to the TV money.

I still get a buzz just before kick off, and the sense of disapointment I get after a poor performance can be measured by how my missus approaches me for the first couple of hours after watching a losing game, so I find it difficult to say that I could take it or leave it.
It is still the working mans sport, even though the working man needs to remortgage his house to get a season ticket, and as such, I and many like me will keep oiling the gears of the Premier Leagues hamster wheel, and seek to hope that our dreams of being able to compete on an even playing field with "the big boys" will actually happen more often than it does at present.
If we could win a cup, get to a final even, or achieve European embaressment, as so many others have.
Ah, if only!
Cheers,
           Kookiebags.

Great reply Kookie!

The point I was trying to make is, as a fan, would Championship football suit us better and give us more enjoyment.

I seem to have lost a bit of interest and passion for Albion at the moment, for whatever reason. I have offered loyalty and support for many years but at the moment find it hard to get excited for their games. I didnt even watch them on the box against arsenal.

I held a season ticket for 14 years, and trust me, travelling from Leeds and back with my dad every other week did test our patience when some of the games were so dyer!

I just want us to recapture the passion.

What I would ask is what will satisfy the fans? Mid Table, Cup Run? or is it always going to be Survival?

RE: Relegation - Is it a bad thing? - Foxman_WBA - 03-12-2014

Championship football has grown since we were last there. There are absolutely no guarantees that we would win every week. Those that go down still tend to struggle, that should tell you something.

I do think if we do go down we’d be mid table at best.

Obviously the ambition is to improve every season and eventually win something but i think the days of that are long gone. There are only 6/7 teams that will win competitions and we aren't one of them, and other than those 7 teams the best anyone else can hope for is mid table obscurity.

RE: Relegation - Is it a bad thing? - tidy - 03-12-2014

I posted on an other site that we would probably only win about 10 games a season and the balance of what we require would be made up with draws (x10).

So far we are just about on track. 3 x wins and 4 x draws.
We have played 10 of the top 11 so far.

Think. We still have to play:

Hull x 2
Palace
Lesta
QPR x 2
Villa x2
Stoke x2
Sunderland
Burnley

...all of the above in the bottom half of the table.
