Team of the Decade - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 28-11-2019 Long-timers out there may vaguely recall that this time ten years ago I posted a thread on BBC 606 inviting everyone to share their Albion team of the 2000s, giving everyone a chance to honour the Baggies who'd defined our yo-yo years. Well, with a month to go until the Roaring Twenties commence, it's time to give it another whirl. Everyone's welcome to submit, and there's only one rule: Your team of the decade must consist of eleven players who have played at least one competitive match for West Bromwich Albion first team between the FA Cup tie at Huddersfield on 2nd January 2010 and the upcoming Championship fixture against Middlesbrough on 29th December 2019.
Beyond that, it's your choice alone. Formation? Up to you. The biggest talents or just your own personal favourites? Up to you. Take off-field shenanigans into account, or concentrate purely on the beautiful game? Up to you. If there are any nearly-men who didn't quite make the final cut and deserve an honourable mention, feel free to stick them on an unlimited subs bench. Provided there are enough responses, I may even try around New Year to see if we can build a consensus based on the names that crop up most. And so without further ado, I give you my XI: Foster
Dawson --- McAuley --- Evans --- Gibbs Mulumbu Barnes --- Morrison --- Brunt Odemwingie --- Lukaku Subs: Olsson, Reid, Scharner, Yacob, Gera, Long, Rodriguez Foster - just the best keeper we had in decades, full stop Dawson - tempted to pick Steven Reid, but fond of the way we nurtured him from lower league player to Prem regular McAuley - one of the great football rags-to-riches stories, and proper servant to the club Evans - shite captain, but on talent alone he was our best centre-half since the Seventies Gibbs - hasn't fully had chance to flourish over a couple of tough years, but probably our best LB since Statham Mulumbu - iconic player at his best, always fondly remembered, scored the winner against Villa in 2011 Brunt - a game-changing player on his day, and one of the last loyal club men Morrison - as above Barnes - a five-month loanee in our team of the decade seems daft, but without his impact, we might have gone straight into a downward spiral after relegation Lukaku - another loanee, but what a loanee; we'll always be his breakthrough club, and to his dying day he'll never celebrate a goal against us Odemwingie - Molineux, February 2012; and all the rest Let's hear your thoughts and your picks! ![]() RE: Team of the Decade - Northwalesbaggie - 28-11-2019 (28-11-2019, 12:35)Ska\dForLife-WBA Wrote: And so without further ado, I give you my XI: Not bad.. in fact very good. But where would you fit in Kevin Phillips, Jason Koumas, Kamara, Koren, RE: Team of the Decade - WBA-Josh - 28-11-2019 Foster
Dawson - McAuley - Olsson - Gibbs Brunt - Mulumbu - Yacob - Morrison Odemwingie - Lukaku Subs - Johnstone, Evans, Reid, Scharner, Dorrans, Gera, Rondon RE: Team of the Decade - Blue Baggie - 28-11-2019 Foster Reid - McAuley - Olsson - Gibbs Gera - Mulumbu - Pereira Odemwingie - Phillips - Lukaku Subs. Johnstone - Brunt - Morrison - Koumas - Scharner - Barnes - JRod RE: Team of the Decade - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 28-11-2019 (28-11-2019, 14:34)Northwalesbaggie Wrote:(28-11-2019, 12:35)Ska\dForLife-WBA Wrote: And so without further ado, I give you my XI: In my team of the 2000s! (To be fair, Koren did play for us at the very beginning of this decade, but he's the only one out of those mentioned, and I consider his contribution to have been mainly in the 2000s, as Di Matteo pretty much froze him out on arrival). RE: Team of the Decade - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 28-11-2019 (28-11-2019, 17:32)Blue Baggie Wrote: Foster Koumas never played for us in this decade, but otherwise a good pick (guessing Phillips must be Matty, because Kevin was also a 2000s player). I considered including Pereira, but reckon it's maybe just a bit too early in what will hopefully be a long Albion career. It only occurred to me this afternoon that Dorrans might be a shout for my subs bench too. Not sure we'd have been promoted in 2010 without him, even if it was a long and disappointing decline for him afterwards. RE: Team of the Decade - drewks - 29-11-2019 As long as Mr Gera and Mr Morrison are included, any team is fine with me! Dawson --- McAuley --- Evans --- Gibbs Mulumbu Barnes --- Morrison --- Brunt Odemwingie --- Lukaku Subs: Olsson,( Reid,) ![]() Just out of interest Ska'd but which Reid is this. My last game at the shrine was against Bolton when we won 2-1 with Long getting the winner. But that day we had two Reids playing for us; one of whom got the opening goal. As a side note, one of them, Ruebin is presently playing for the Cheltenham Town side. Obviously now in the autumn of his career. RE: Team of the Decade - Ska'dForLife-WBA - 29-11-2019 Steven Reid. Can't seem to find a team sheet for that Bolton match, but the opening goalscorer was definitely Jerome Thomas, and I'd be amazed if we had Reuben Reid on the pitch at all; he only ever made cameo appearances in cup games as far as I recall, and left after a couple of years. |
