Baggies Midfield - santasabaggie - 10-11-2014
Brunt and Morrison are pretty much finished at Prem level.They are way to comfortable at the club and need to go.Both have been good servants but enough is enough.We must get in the new guys.Verela.Blanco,and Gamboa playing further forward.if the new summer signings are not good enough,then we go shopping again.............time for change.

Nah - actually I disagree. Brunty takes a lot of stick, a lot of it unfair IMO; his body language isn't the best and nor is his speed BUT he does actually get through a lot of work and still delivers a cracking ball. Maybe shouldn't be an automatic choice but IMO still good enough.
Same re Mozza - I think he's being asked to play in a more defensive way and he, too, works very hard at it, but IMO his strength is carrying the ball forward just behind, and in support of, the front player(s). I'd love to see him given that bit more freedom to play this role as I believe his still a good PL player.
However I agree that we DO need to mix it up a bit and have more creativity and more support from this area to the forward line; if we haven't got a prolific scorer as a forward then the midfield have GOT to be allowed to forage further forward to support and chip in with goals themselves.
Come on AI - we've got the players to allow this to happen!

I think Brunt still has the ability to pick a pass - but needs forward
options which are drastically lacking with Irvine's old school flat 4
man midfield.
I'd much rather he played in the centre of a 4-5-1, where he could
use his range of passing. He has been rendered useless for most
of the season on the left of Irvine's flat 4.
Mozza is IMO a squad player at this level, while Dorrans isn't
anywhere near consistent enough to get in this side. He rarely looks
like creating anything these days, has lost the hunger for goals and
edge that made him so promising in the Di Matteo era.
I think you can get away with a couple if these guys, but not a whole
midfield of them. You need someone in the midfield who has the ability
to beat a man and make something happen, float into the hole
occasionally and get alongside the forwards - together these guys
don't have that ability (or it is being coached out of them).

What's people's feelings on Sess ?
It seems there are mixed feelings about him - some say we only win when Sess starts, some say he's a lazy little sh1t. In my opinion he doesn't contribute anywhere near enough and goes missing for long periods of any game only having occasional flashes such as the goal versus Man Ure. Can't really say he could be used as an impact sub as he was hardly noticed when he came on against the Toons.
I'd much rather have someone who would give 110%, gets involved and at least try's.

1st 2 names on the teamsheet a year ago were Mulumbu and Yacob, and yet those 2 are hardly mentioned. Come on, Al, they can't have become poor players so quickly.

I actually thought Mulumbu was horrendous on Sunday, looked so lost on the ball and out of his depth!!
We are obviously trying to get the width into our team so get some pace on the field,
We need to be using these players to get them used to how we play!
I thought Brunt put a good shift in on Sunday mind!

Problem is, we started with about nine different "tryers" in the side on Sunday, and look what happened. We need somebody on the pitch with proven quality, even if they blow hot and cold.

On his day he'd walk into any side in the league but like most players of his DNA, he
doesn't have his day regularly enough and to tell the truth, that's probably why he's
playing for us.
For all his frustrating attributes, we don't look like we're going to create when he
doesn't start.
The other thing is, as a dribbler, you need players in more advanced positions than you
to be most effective. In order to keep the defenders guessing, you need to have players
right and left so you're able to shape a pass and drop the shoulder.
Defenders at this level will dominate most dribblers if they know he has no choice but to
take them on.
And that's a lot of the problem with Sess being ineffective. When he was at his best last season
in the period when we beat Man United away, we played a 4-5-1 with Saido on left and
Amalfitano on the right. We broke with pace and purpose. When Sess picked up the ball he often
had both of them in front of him as well as the striker and the defenders didn't know what
he was going to do.
Irvine's formation however seems to have an emphasis on defence. I can rarely remember
a midfielder being in front of Sess when he's picked up the ball at all this season. In fact, there's
often a 30 yard gap between the forwards and midfield players. Making it extremely difficult
to take players on because they know exactly what he's going to do.
For me, he has to start. But would be far more effective in a 4-5-1 with wingers who actually
got beyond the forwards and look to be a goal threat from open play. I think he'd be a real
threat if he played for a side like Swansea who have the likes of Dyer, Montero and Routledge
always bombing on and looking to get in behind.
