Wow ! - bluepooch - 05-08-2017

Its not a time for knee jerk reactions but I Definitely wasnt expecting that result ,not that we were rubbish,we dominated possession and had 30 shots but I expected more .
Anyon as Ive mentioned doesnt fill me with confidence and it could be argued that Lee may have stopped all 3 goals.
Second half we camped in their half and must have had a dozen corners but there werent enough ooooh moments .
Ugwu and O Grady in particular were poor second half when the pressure was on .
Its difficult to judge first game of the season ,we dont know how good Grimsby are ,they certainly coped well defensively and the lad Dembele looks a real find but its another defeat for GC and he needs to start winning pretty soon.
Plusses were Donohue ,Reed and Weir until he tired.
We cant judge on Tuesday either, there will be lots of changes.Ive always said give GC 6/10 games to judge him with his own team and I stand by that .

Donohue MOM for me. O'grady and Ugwu were like the Titanic and QE2. O'grady spent more time down than stood up and they were both just too slow and cumbersome. They gave Grimsby too much time to get in front of them and stifle every attack.
Where was our top scorer in the friendlies? Not even in the squad.
Just like last season, quick breaks and we cant cope. Wiseman looked like he was still on holiday.
So whats that now 2 wins in 18?
Captain sent off and 4 yellow cards - Welcome to league 2

Dancing I agree with Donohue as MOM he worked pretty hard throughout the match. O'Grady and Ugwu did alright but what really frustrated me was instead of turning and having a shot they kept passing it about. O'Grady was out muscled a lot by there CB.

The first goal we conceded should have been dealt with because there were 3 players in the box stood around him yet somehow he still managed to get his head on it. There 2nd goal was pretty good there number 27 was pretty skilful and seemed to cut through our defence like a knife through butter. Was pretty frustrating that when we created chances there was no one on the end of them to put it away.

Sam Hird did well to double block that shot which should have been a certain goal. Dennis took his goal well and there was a chance we could snatch a draw until we gave away a penalty.

What annoyed me was the amount of handballs Grimsby did and not to mention the referee he needs to get himself down to Specsavers and get a pair of glasses his performance was inept.

Did anyone see the trouble after the game? If they are like that when they win I wouldn't like to see them when they lose. Also there were a few Grimsby fans sat in the home end as well.

RE: Wow ! - Devongone - 06-08-2017

I don't think I've ever seen a team get 30 efforts on goal in Press Association Stats.

I'm not saying CO'G is a bad player, but I can't see why we signed him when we clearly needed other positions. I wanted us to go for Gozie in order to do CO'G's job and we'd signed him ....... So I'm baffled how it fits together. We need Dennison the field in order to score, specially if it is to take 30 efforts for one goal.

How often have I to repeat that Wiseman, Hird and Evatt combined is a way to concede unless you play an attack as old as Notts County's? At least Evatt's sending off probably forces Maguire into the team, but if he really isn't any better than Stadtler, Waldorf and Gonzo then we're yeoviled.

Our midfield clearly cannot provide the protection those backs need. Of the side that beat Donny the manager chose to leave out Barry and Mitchell didn't he, two of the quickest players? Sorry but pace is indispensable.

By my reckoning our manager stands at 2 from 20 and won 1 in 5 of the friendlies against full-time players. If we had a proper club, a proper owner, a real CEO and a board I'd say SACK the manager first thing Monday morning, but he just reflects the state of the club. Nearly 8,000 turned up to see a result that set them up ideally for watching Justin Gatlin win gold.

If Tommy Lee is reckoned fit enough to sit on the bench and therefore fit enough to cover if Anyon is injured in the first minute HE SHOULD OBVIOUSLY BE IN THE TEAM, as Anyon is a second choice for ANY league team. If Tommy isn't fit then his selection ahead of Dylan Parkin is a gratuitous insult and a danger to Tommy's future.

I'm sorry I was right that the team Pooch almost accurately predicted was a loser. Genuine supporters deserve more and better. GC gave us one of the worst, if not the worst side in all four divisions last season. This season ....? I'm off the Specsavers for some rose-tinteds.

If Wednesday wake up and play Rhodes, Hooper and Forestieri in one team we'll be on a real yeoviling.

I've not mentioned the blindingly obvious. Coventry selected a teenager. He scored a hat trick. We end the game in the ludicrous position of four centre forwards on the field (which never works) and who isn't good enough to even sit on the bench?

Here is a measure of how stupid and self-serving our manager is. I bet he throws Ricky to the Owls. Okay son, four forwards couldn't beat a Division 2 side, prove yourself against a Championship team that doesn't concede many and don't expect much help from midfield. Bought the league paper today as a last gesture to the club's disappearing status.

RE: Wow ! - bluepooch - 06-08-2017

GC inherited the worst team in the league ,Danny Wilsons and brought in less than average players which didnt improve it .
I always said judge him with his own team which is this season and no we cant judge it on this one game .The team yesterday was a loser but come on theres more to it than that Dev even a wise old owl like you knows that .On another day we could have won 5-4 .

RE: Wow ! - spireitematt - 06-08-2017

To be fair I thought there were a lot of positives from yesterday's match, we played ok but if we had took our chances the result might have been different. Only 1 game of the season so we can't read anything into it.

Last season Sheffield United lost there first 4 league games and still won L1.

I was looking if we have ever lost or not won on the opening day and got promoted and yes we did back in 1969-1970 season we drew the first league game of the season against Swansea 0-0 and got beat by Port Vale at home 1-0. Also we got beat by Bradford in the league cup over 2 legs. First win came against Darlington 1-0 away but then lost the next game away against Aldershot 1-0.

RE: Wow ! - Dancingwilldoit - 06-08-2017

Blue, on the other hand if it hadn't been for Sam Hird making 2 excellent blocks and Anyon pulling off a world class save it could well have been 1-5.
Yes we had chances but how many were even close? We either shot straight at the keeper, put it miles high or wide or hit a Grimsby player. We didn't hit the post or the crossbar once we just never got that close. Our build up play was pretty good but in the final third we were terrible. Every time they attacked on the break they looked dangerous. With our defence we are going to have to score a bag full to stand a chance of winning a game. IMO O'grady and Ugwu just isn't the combination to do that.
Incidentally we weren't the worst side in the division when GC took over, we weren't even in the drop zone but it didn't take him too long for him to make sure that we were.

RE: Wow ! - bluepooch - 06-08-2017

Just looked at the replay and Hird was at fault for two of their goals ,(among others ).
We put ourselves on at least 4 great positions to score and fluffed them thats what I was getting at with the potential scoreline.
On another day we may have put them in just saying.
Caldwell did manage to offload O Neill and Liddle and for that Ill be forever grateful.

RE: Wow ! - Devongone - 07-08-2017

Oh dear Pooch, the team that Danny left was obviously miles better than the joke GC created. Look at the points accumulated! GC got us twelve points in just under half a season (19 games!) Jeff Stelling stabbed Dave Jones to death for doing something similar!

Even under Dean Saunders and Danny I could see a shape to the team we were attempting to recruit. But this team looks as though GC is putting together pieces from three different jigsaw puzzles. I hope he can see a picture because I haven't seen the box!

0-2 at half time, first move hook the youngest player. That shows what kind of man GC is. In his head he's lion, but if we return to music he's Florence's rabbit-hearted girl. That's Florence and the Machine by the way.

Neutral reports do all seem to suggest Grimsby won fairly easily and remained calm under pressure.

If Scott Wiseman fits into the jigsaw, how do Barry and McGinn fit at all. If Wiseman's on the right how can you pair him with both Hird and Evatt in the centre? Who covers the left, Donohue? How many jobs do we expect from him? Then we look to midfield, who is where, doing what job, who wins the ball, who passes and who creates? Why isn't Weir fit enough for 90 minutes, didn't he know he was a footballer? Then going forward, where's the pace to complement the size?

RE: Wow ! - Dancingwilldoit - 07-08-2017

GC even had the pitch widened to accommodate his preferred formation with wing backs then puts out a 4-1-3-2 line up with no wide players in the team???
2 big forwards with nobody to get balls onto their heads. Says it all really.
If we don't score an average of 2+ per game, I can see us going nowhere with our sieve - sorry, defence.
Not looking forward to tomorrow night either. If Weds put out a strong team it could be a cricket score, I hope not but we need to be better than good.
