fa cup match thread - jjamez - 05-01-2017

Firstly, my apologies for it being relatively short, I've not been great the last few days, so maybe we could use the spare space as advertising space?

yes I know that it has pretty much nothing to do with the FA Cup or either of the two sides, but I have no regrets, still funny.

Now onto Saturdays game. A resurgent Town side, fresh from a scrappy 1-0 win away at Wigan, look to start up a cup run at home to managerless league one side Port Vale who sit 17th position.

So what do we know about Port Vale or more accurately, what do I know about Port Vale? The answer to that is unfortunately not a great deal, but for the last decade they have flucuated between league 2 and league 1 and have long been a steady club that one day may find themselves ready to make the step up to the championship, but it isnt like they have never been there before, in fact before the turn of the millenium they beat town 4-0 at what was then the McAlpine Stadium in order to keep themselves in the old division one.

But what of this season?

Well they too, like us, took a punt on a foreign manager in the form of pedro ribeiro, he took over in June and became the clubs first foreign manager, but resigned after only 7 wins in 23 games, leaving the club 6 points above the relegation places after 6 games without a win. Since then he has been replaced by former Leeds United and Sheffield United midfielder Michael Brown, who in his two games in charge has overseen a 1-0 win against Chesterfield and a 0-0 draw with Oldham.

So onto the game.

This is probably a good time to get a few of the kids into the side or at least a couple of the squad players ie THD, Coleman etc and it would be a shame if we didnt. However, we dont want to make too many changes that we can end up tripping and falling at the first hurdle, as despite being in the playoff/promotion race, it would be nice to get a bit of a cup run going and getting a bit of extra money in.

on that basis i would expect a fairly strong lineup with a couple of players here and there being rested.

jj's line up

Coleman
Cranie
Hefele
Stankovic
THD
Whitehead©
Billing
Lolley
Payne
Bunn
Wells

bench- Coddington,schindler,mooy,kach,rajiv,pyke,lowe

As for Port Vale, like I said earlier, I am not very knowledgable about them and I dont know how much they fancy their chances or if they are going to be putting more emphasis on getting up the league. Although I would expect them to want to have a bit of a cup run and if Brown fancies his chances of getting the full time gig, then a win against a higher division club, regardless of who they are would surely back his claim.

Notable fans

Now Port Vale are based in Burslem and have a local rivalry with premier league side stoke, but that hasnt stopped them from having a few famous faces supporting the Valiants

16x world darts champion Phil Taylor was born in Burslem and is a know supporter of the club, as is former boyband 'Blue' member Simon Webbe.

the most notable famous fan is Robbie Williams. He was a shareholder at the club before they entered administration in 2012.

Played for both/notable former players

firstly on the former players, jamaican footballing legend and town icon theo robinson used to play for port vale until he left to join non league lincoln city. obviously I am exagerating the legend and icon part, but his first spell at town did see him having a relatively good scoring rate, although he fluffed a lot of chances in that period, normally when he had to think about it. his spell at port vale saw him score only twice in 14 games at the club.

another striker, this time its the boxing man himself, martin paterson. He joined town from burnley, having played for them in the premier league and was mark robins' third summer signing. he had scored 29 in 130 games and at town he didnt fare much better 5 in 25 games. he is better known for punching adam clayton during his time at town, although the two did link up on their first game back in the same line up when he scored against sheffield wednesday. he left town for america and returned back to england not long after. he played last season at vale, managing to find the net twice in 16 games, before leaving late last year.

A name for town fans is adnan ahmed. he joined towns academy from manchester united and played 41 times for town, but became better known for his lack of tackling ability, nearly injuring players on multiple occasions. his time at port vale was a 5 game loan whilst he was at town. since leaving town he has turned out for hungarian side ferencvaros, iranian second division side aboumoslem, as well as nelson, droylsden and bradford park avenue.

a final name for town fans is that of the first english player to play in the chinese football league, or what is now known as the money bags league. his name? Akpo Sodje. remember him? he joined town when his big brother efe was at town. the striker didnt feature much for town during his year at the club. appearing only 7 times. his time at port vale was a little longer. he featured 46 times scoring 14 goals before he left for sheffield wednesday. over the course of his career he has played for clubs such as charlton, hibernian and chinese side tianjin teda.

former players include former wimbledon midfielder robbie earle, bean pole striker tom pope (who has been linkedto town once or twice in years gone by), former town manager brian horton played for vale as did john mccombe. but i am struggling to think of any really notable players, maybe you could think of some

Nice one jjamez, didn't realise Mr. Burns of the Simpson's was involved with this lot.

RE: fa cup match thread - jjamez - 05-01-2017

I thought he was related to ken davy?

RE: fa cup match thread - Lord Snooty - 05-01-2017

Nice one, jjamez.

The Mr Burns lookalike is another Town connection. John Rudge it do be and he was their manager for about 20 years. However, he started his footballing career at Huddersfield Town.

RE: fa cup match thread - SHEP_HTAFC - 06-01-2017

Great thread jj Thumb up
I like the look of that team jj......seems to have a good balance between experience and youth.
Rest our big players like Mooy and Kach would be a good thing just now. It's been a busy holiday period and some of them must be knackered. Keep Wells in just now as he seems to have found his scoring boots.

RE: fa cup match thread - Lord Snooty - 06-01-2017

No Scanz. He's had ankle surgery and will be out til March.

Van the man and Hoggy also out of this match.
