My only visit in October 1996 resulted ina 1-0 defeat with a Russ Wilcox own goal in the 93rd minute
Preston North End head to Vicarage Road for the first time in almost ten years when they take on Vladimir Ivić’s Watford this weekend.
First Team News
It was February 2011 when the Lilywhites last locked horns with their weekend’s hosts, with Sean St. Ledger and Leon Clarke scoring in a 2-2 draw.
Since then the two sides have had periods when they were two divisions apart, but now find themselves fighting for the same aim in the Championship, to get to the top flight.
Ivic’s side, who had a goalless draw at Bristol City in midweek currently sit fifth in the table with 23 points after a solid start to the season under their new boss and with a Premier League experienced squad at their disposal, it will be another good test for Alex Neil’s injury and suspension hit squad.
Team News
Where do we start?! Manager Alex Neil was without Louis Moult, Billy Bodin, Josh Earl, Ben Pearson, Ben Davies, Paul Gallagher, Josh Harrop and Andrew Hughes all through injury for the midweek clash with Blackburn.
Alan Browne picked up his fifth booking of the season in the clash with the Lancashire rivals, whilst Joe Rafferty much also sit out the game following his red card against Tony Mowbray’s men.
At the time of writing, the FA are still to hear the case relating to Darnell Fisher’s charge of violent conduct for an off the ball incident caught on camera versus Sheffield Wednesday. If he is found guilty, he will miss the game and potentially the clashes with AFC Bournemouth and Wycombe Wanderers as well.
Watford announced on Wednesday, prior to their game at Ashton Gate, that they had three first team player isolating after Covid-19 tests and they have stated that they will miss the with the Lilywhites at the weekend.
Meanwhile, Tom Cleverly was again absent for the midweek trip to the south west and he remains a doubt for the visit of North End, but Troy Deeney, who came off the bench in the second half could be set for his first start of the season.
Match Officials
Australian referee Jarred Gillett – who was the fourth official at Deepdale on Tuesday night - will take charge of his third Preston North End game for Saturday’s match.
The Aussie joined the EFL lists in 2018/19, after taking up an educational position in Liverpool, but he has been a top class official in his home country’s A League for many years.
He took charge of his first Championship game at the end of that season and joined the Select Group Two list in 2019/20. This season he has officiated ten games, issuing 36 yellow and two red cards, including four cautions in Watford’s goalless draw at Sheffield Wednesday in mid-September.
His first trip to Deepdale was over the last Christmas period when he took charge of our last game of 2019, against Reading, as well as the club’s 5,000th league game against Derby County back in July.
Jarred will be assisted by Philip Dermott and Robert Hyde, with Adrian Quelch acting as the fourth official.
MACS VIEW
Having been placed in Tier 3 misery due to our diseasd East Lancashire kinfolk which means I cannot go and watch my local Level 6 club average attendance 60 as they also have to play behind closed doors, add into that a hammering against the Plastics on Tuesday night, and a first team which is likely to be without any full backs, this looks like a straight forward home win.
Luckily for the home support they are in Tier 2 and one upside of this is that their support are not allowed in to watch our hapless side.
The home side did well to keep most of their players following their relegation last season and have a chance of returning to the top flight at the first attempt. If they don't go up they will no doubt sack the manager.
Altrhough they have recruited from far and wide still think Ben Foster is a more than decent keeper and has kept them in games at times this season, given our lack of shots on targets in the last two matches would be nice to think we would test him tomorrow.
Personal view free hit this game not expected to get anything lets hope wounded pride spurs them on.
FAMOUS WATFORD PEOPLE
Thomas Ernest Bennett "Tibby" Clarke (7 June 1907 – 11 February 1989) was a movie scriptwriter who wrote several of the Ealing Studios comedies. His elder brother Dudley Clarke was notable as a military deception pioneer.
His scripts always feature careful logical development from a slightly absurd premise to a farcical conclusion. In 1952 he was awarded a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his script for The Lavender Hill Mob, making him one of just a handful of Britons to receive this award. He continued to work as a scriptwriter after Ealing ceased production in the mid-1950s, his later contributions including Sons and Lovers and the Disney film The Horse Without a Head.
Clarke was also a novelist and writer of non-fiction, and was not above presenting his fictions as fact – most notably the 1981 book Murder at Buckingham Palace, which purports to tell the story of a hushed-up murder in the Royal residence in 1935. Despite its including 'documentary' photographs, there is no external evidence that the book is anything but pure fiction. For The Blue Lamp (1950) he drew on his experience as a war reserve constable with the Metropolitan Police during the Second World War.[1][2]
He was the subject of This Is Your Life in 1960 when he was surprised by Eamonn Andrews at the BBC Television Theatre
Thomas won't be at the game tomorrow as we are still in lockdown and the fact he is dead also stops him.
