Birmingham City have signed Danish defender Kristian Pedersen from German side Union Berlin.

The 23-year-old left-back becomes Blues’ first signing under Garry Monk and kicks off the club’s summer transfer business.

The deal was agreed weeks ago and Pedersen checked out the Second City yesterday ahead of today’s announcement. He’s believed to have cost Blues around £2.2million.

The former Denmark under-21 international started 30 of Union Berlin’s 34 Bundesliga II matches last term as they finished eighth in the German second tier.

He is a good signing for Blues.

Given that I'm an avid follower of Union Berlin, I've seen a lot Pedersen since he joined Union two years. When he first started with Union he was a good defender but not particularly good going forward. His decision making would let him down and his technical ability with the ball was lacking. As he adjusted more to the 2.Bundesliga, he started to become a better all-round left back and started to perform at a good, consistent level.

His time at the club didn't end too well though as he was dropped by Andre Hofschneider in favour of Kurzweg towards the end of the season but he did come off the bench in the second half of the final game. I'm not sure Union Berlin will miss him too much because they have signed Ken Reichel, who in my opinion is a better player, and they have Kurzweg (probably going to join 1860 Munich) and Lenz (returned from loan to Holstein Kiel) to provide cover.

Even with how it ended at Union, Blues have still got themselves a solid left back for a good price who will continue to improve.
