Albion Rovers play in the North Lanarkshire town of Coatbridge, which has a population 41,000 and lies only about 10 miles from Glasgow city centre. Founded in 1882 as the result of an amalgamation of two other teams, the club joined the Scottish Football League initially in 1903. Although they have spent most of their time in the lower divisions they have maintained their league membership since 1919, but all their major honours have been confined to the lower two divisions of the senior league system.

In 1915 the Scottish Football League merged itself into a single division structure, with the second division being scrapped. Albion Rovers moved to join the Western Football League and whilst still members moved into their current Cliftonhill home in 1919. Having completed their new stadium, they returned to the single division Scottish League for the 1919–20 season. Although they finished rock bottom that season the club also enjoyed its finest hours defeating Rangers in the semi-final of the Scottish Cup, before losing 3–2 to Kilmarnock in a Final for which their keeper reputedly had to be bailed from police custody on the morning of the game.

The club won Scottish Division Two in 1933-4 when it was the second tier of the game, and were runners-up three times at that level. They won the Second Division as the third tier in 1988-89, and the Third Division as the fourth tier in 2010-11. In 2014-15 they won League Two again as the fourth tier. They've also won two Division Two play-offs.

Celebrated player:

The club's 1947-8 Division Two promotion campaign was memorable for having Jock Stein in their line-up. Stein played 94 games in all for Albion Rovers.

Travel:

By road:

Leave the M74 at Junction 5 and take the A725 to Coatbridge. Continue the centre of Coatbridge and on reaching a large traffic island (where you can see the floodlights of the ground up on the right), turn right onto the A89 towards Airdrie. The ground is down this road on the left.

By rail:

The nearest station is Coatdyke, a ten minute walk from the ground. Coming out of the station bear left up Quarry Street. Go over the crossroad and after about a quarter of a mile pass a church on your right. At the end of Quarry Street turn left onto Muiryhall Street and right onto Main Street. Pass the Fire Station on the left. Continue on Main Street to the stadium on your right.
I've been to the speedway (Coatbridge Tigers) at Rovers ground way back in the seventies.
