THE MATCH - Saturday 16th April 2016 at 3 PM BST
V
After our hapless visit to the land of combine harvesters we now see a visit to S6 from the Tractor Boys from Ipswich! A few weeks ago this match was considered one of the most important games in our run in but as we stand a win for them is far more important to them in the whole scheme of things than it is for us!! Not that its not important for us, but this is really a must win for Ipswich if they want to get back in the running for the playoffs. It wasn't that long ago that we were neck and neck with them in the league but with 5 games to go we are now sitting 8 points clear of them and a win for us will virtually end their interest, so I suppose it really is a must win for us as well!!!
We all know what we will get from a Yorkshire Mick team, no nonsense, whinging, direct and scorers of a lot of late goals!!! Yet when you look at the actual stats they not only don't score that many in the last ten minutes (6 so far), they actually have conceded just as many (6)!!! In fact we have scored 10 goals in the last 10 minutes of games and have only conceded a league low of 3 over that same period!!! So in reality they should be worried about us winning a game late rather than us worrying about them!!
This will be the 47th meeting with them and our record is a mediocre W17 D11 L18, with our home record being just as mediocre at W8 D8 L5. We have not won any of the last 6 home games against them (D2 L4) and have to go back to 2007 since we last beat them at home, so once again this season we find ourselves in a game with a streak to break, something we have quite a bit of so far this year!! The away match earlier this season saw us go 1-0 up only to eventually lose 2-1, but this game was in August before we had Forestieri, Bannan and Hooper playing for us so we should be a different proposition to them this time.
THE LAST MATCH
Why oh why have we lost to so many of the bottom teams this season?? Is is complacency, is it the fact they maybe defend more or don't come at us as much, is it the players or the managements fault etc etc etc?? Who knows but it cannot be denied that our some of our performances against teams down near the bottom have cost us a shot at an auto place instead of a shot of the playoffs!! No point in saying anything else, it was crap, we were crap and the result was crap!!!
If you want to watch the video of the highlights, feel free we all know where to find them!!!
THE ROAD AHEAD
At the moment we find ourselves in 6th place with a decent 5 point cushion over Cardiff, but just to cheer us up I have taken a look at how the 6th placed team after 41 games has fared over the last 10 seasons!! Here is what I found:
After 41 games for each of the last 10 seasons, the team placed 6th at that time ended up the season placed:
4th - 2 times
5th - 3 times
6th - 2 times
7th - 3 times
Doesn't tell us a huge amount except that just about anything can happen, so I looked at what the gap was between 6th and 7th after 41 games for each season as well:
4th place finishes - 2 points and 8 point gaps
5th place finishes - 1 point gap twice and a 4 point gap
6th place finishes - 0 points and 1 point gaps
7th place finishes - 1 point gap twice and a 2 point gap
So as we can see our 5 point gap is the second biggest over that time span and on average thee bigger the gap the higher the 6th placed team ended up finishing, so there is some comfort there!! Of course it also confirms that the Auto spots are dead and buried for us!!
