England and Sunderland footballer Adam Johnson has been charged with three counts of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.

The 27-year-old, from Castle Eden, County Durham, was initially arrested on 2 March.

He was also charged with one offence of grooming when he answered bail at a police station earlier, Durham Police said.

He will appear before Peterlee Magistrates' Court on 20 May.

Sunderland AFC initially suspended the winger pending the outcome of the investigation, but this was lifted on 18 March.

The club are yet to comment on the charges.

Sunderland should immediately suspend him pending the outcome of the hearing. He like everyone else is innocent until proven guilty. When they removed the suspension earlier I got the feeling they assumed he wasn't going to be charged with anything, so either they got some bad legal advice or something else came to light which caused him to be now charged. If found guilty he should be immediately fired by the club irrespective of whether he gets jail time or not.

Its terrible, I mean 15 year olds nowadays arent the angels of yesteryear yet its the law of the UK he has been charged and at least from the outset of what we know `shouldve known much better` given his place as a professional footballer and an idol to many

However, I believe this has come out at a certain time to cover something or rather someone else usually someone higher in society usually in Parliament or perhaps nobler blood
Maybe its easy to forget the MP who can claim £300 per day of tax payers expenses sitting in the House of Commons is unable to be judged for his crimes against children due to his health? Thats the type of thing which usually happens in this country, especially with the elections looming I believe a scandal was about to break, what better way to move peoples attentions away by pointing at someone in entertainment and taking the focus away?
Might be slightly conspiracist but you know yourself it happens!

Its called the news cycle, every government in all western countries use this tactic to get out news that they don't want people to notice. Now not saying that they falsely accuse anyone to create a bigger story, but the timing of some of these announcments is not coincidental!!!

But I am not sure this is the case in this one, I just wonder if they found more evidence, maybe the grooming charge, that made them decide to charge him now.
