A narrow defeat to Chelsea should be no reason for a manager to go, so I'm not saying this just on the back of that match (especially after Villa scored for the first time in 7 PL matches), but looking at the season overall how much can the club endure under Lambert? After a good start the only wins Villa have managed were against Leicester and Crystal Palace - 2 clubs struggling badly at that point - and they didn't win either of the return games. It doesn't bode well for the remainder of the season and at best it seems like something around the 36-38 point mark is likely come the end of the season.

Now that might well be enough to keep the club up, but there's been no improvement that I can see under Lambert, and the recent problems with goalscoring suggest significant problems in that area in particular. Is this something Villa should be happy with in the sense that staying up is the priority, or is it time to bring in someone to move things forward before they take that crucial step backwards? Does Lambert deserve even more time than he's had, is it time for a new manager with new ideas, or should Lambert actually be seen as a success for keeping things steady?
Aston Villa Football Club has parted company this evening with manager Paul Lambert.

First-team coach Scott Marshall and goalkeeping coach Andy Marshall will continue to prepare the squad for Sunday's FA Cup tie with Leicester City at Villa Park.

The club would also like to place on record its thanks to Paul and take this opportunity to wish him every success in the future.

The club will announce a new manager in due course.

There will be no further comment from the club at this stage.

I think its right in some respects I havent liked how he`s been backed this year but he never played the sort of Football I thought he would after his first year in charge and went from hopeful to clueless
Clubs shouldnt do things like this at this time of year unless they have someone to bring in theyve already had in mind in my opinion
