The Scottish Cup starts on Saturday, the draw is below, read the names, many of them are sheer poetry. I am not taking the p... They are genuinely beautiful. My favourite used to be Gala Fairydean, but who wouldn't want to play for Banks O'Dee, Vale of Leithen, Bonnyrigg Rose, Forres Mechanics, Hill of Beath Hawthorn, or Auchinleck Talbot? Given the choice I suppose I'd be turning out for the team I've been following from childhood, Brechin City. Get them back in the league now!

I don't know if the Scottish Cup has been de-valued like its English counterpart, but it is clearly something to be treasured. It's a history, a geography and a culture. It's an identity to be proud of. I just love it. I can't wait for the results.

My all-time favourite is Civil Service Strollers, closely followed by St Cuthbert Wanderers. They'll never win anything until they get some sprint training programmes.
Nostalgic memories indeed! The mere mention of Gala Fairydean certainly takes me back to my footie days as a kid when I played against them in close season friendly matches during the summer months in a nice little outing to the Borders. Civil Service Strollers was another friendly match "closer to home" as well as Tranent Juniors. I'd certainly like to see Spartans finally get a decent Scottish Cup run for a change starting with Gala Fairydean on Saturday. They've been a great disappointment in that regard for a good number of years and it would be nice to see that position change for them.
If there has ever been a combination you'd want to play against it has to be a team of civil servants who call themselves strollers. Our old Sunday League team used to come up against a team who not only played in the poshest area of Chesterfield, but also had brothers on each wing who were their most dangerous players - but one was a solicitor, the other ran his family's rather posh restaurant. Mind you, though our lads who were foundry workers, steel men and miners by and large and were convinced that they could never lose to such a middle-class team, somehow they were prepared to forget they had a long-haired student in goal (me), a civil servant and the deputy town clerk as full backs, and sometimes a very promising schoolboy on the wing ......... Nevertheless we identified as working class, and identity matters. That's why I love these Scottish teams. Their names just resonate.

I've got a feeling that if the University of Stirling hadn't made the huge mistake of rejecting me (maybe I should have sent them clips of me keeping goal ....) I'd still be up in Scotland now.
Gala Fairydean is a cracking wee club.

Absolute certainty that St Cuthberts are winning that tie as well. I have a real soft spot for them as I have family ties from that area.
I loved Gala F's old wooden stand when I visited their ground to play - out on its own in what was a big expanse of green, definitely "stood out like a sore thumb". I always wondered if they would ever add to it and balance up the view from up above - make it more symmetrical!
Fairies, Strollers and Wanderers all won yesterday. Keep it going, lads.

Gala Fairydean must be one of the best results of the day as The Spartans are well above them in the Lpwland League, though I think Sauchie Juniors win at Fraserburgh must beat it as the home side are topping the Highland League by seven clear points, having only dropped one point so far this season.
Dunbar Utd v Lothian thistle/Hutchison Vale or Edinburgh Uni.

St Cuthbert Wanderers v Gala Fairydean.

Annan Athletic v Jeanfield Swifts.

East Kilbride v Stirling University.

Mouthwatering ties.
