After the joys of the International break which basically is just an excuse to lose money betting against Andorra, real football returns although the way the Whites and the Royals have been performing there may be doubts as to whether that this will be real.

Both teams badly need to win Reading appear to been on the crest of a slump for the best part of two seasons, getting shut of Stam and replacing him with Paul Clement. Clement is the brother of ex North Ender Neil who made four appearences for us which if memory is correct included a sending off at Colchester.
Clement has served as a Number 2 with Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich however as a manager in his own right has proved to be pretty inept getting potted following a game at Derby against us.
So far this season they have drawn with the Plastics at Ewood and the Villa and lost the rest including opening the season with a 2-1 home defeat against Frank Lampard FC. They have two speedy wingers Burrow and Aluko and also have one of those Chelsea prospects who never quite got there in John Swift.
We need a win otherwise the natives will be restless as we hit Yorkshire twice next week

Ref Watch: Reading

Lancashire referee Darren Bond takes charge of his first North End game of the season when the Lilywhites entertain Paul Clement’s Reading this weekend.

Last season Darren took charge of three PNE games. He was the match official in the club’s home draw against Millwall in September, our 2-1 win at Bristol City back in November 2017 and the 2-0 victory over Sunderland up at the Stadium of Light in March.

He also officiated three Reading games last season, two at the Madejski Stadium, a win over Barnsley and a defeat to Brentford and the Royals 3-0 defeat in March at Aston Villa.

This will be his seventh game of this season, having issued 21 yellow cards and two reds in the six games so far refereed, his last being Peterborough United’s 1-1 home draw with Doncaster Rovers on 1st September.

Although he had done numerous friendlies and other games involving Preston North End, the 2016/17 season was the first time the experienced official took charge of competitive fixtures involving the club, as he refereed the two home 1-1 draws with Burton Albion and Nottingham Forest.

The referee will be assisted by Mark Jones and Nick Hopton, with David Webb as the fourth official.

Team News: Reading

Manager Alex Neil will be without a number of midfield options for the clash with Reading at Deepdale this weekend.
Ben Pearson sits out the first of three matches for the red card he received in the last home game against Bolton Wanderers a fortnight ago; whilst it is Ryan Ledson’s second match of his three-game ban.

Alan Browne returned early from international duty with the Republic of Ireland and he will be assessed before the manager makes any decision of selection for the middle of the park.

Calum Woods and Sean Maguire (both hamstring) move closer to training, with the latter now out running in the early stages of his rehabilitation, whilst Billy Bodin (knee) is obviously still on the sidelines.

Lukas Nmecha missed the last game with a knock to his knee and also pulled out of international duty with the England U20 squad and he too will need to be assessed before the final squad announcement is made.

Reading striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson is set to return to the starting line-up, after the Icelander missed the 2-1 home defeat by Sheffield Wednesday due to illness.

Bodvarsson, Chris Gunter, Andy Yiadom, David Meyler, Mo Barrow and Leandro Bacuna have all been away on international duty, but should all return unscathed and are expected to be involved.

Southampton loan man Josh Sims could feature having come off the substitutes' bench in the past three matches and could replace Sone Aluko on the right. However, new Iranian midfielder Saeid Ezatolahi, signed on deadline day, is unlikely to feature having only met his new team-mates for the first time on Thursday.
