I suppose F1 and other racing drivers have always been very image conscious, it is a sport where not only do they want to look good but the car has to look good as well!! I do think they are sometimes trying to make an inherently dangerous sport too safe with some of the things they do, but one like this that really doesn't effect the performance of the car or driver so shouldn't cause any issues.
