Big Signing - Devongone - 11-09-2018

Well you don't generally get much bigger than 6'7" in football.

We've signed Tom Denton from Alfreton. Rumour on Bob's was that he had turned us down to continue as a plasterer. Two hours later he'd signed.

Personally I'd have gone for Rowan Liburd from Guiseley but he's only 6' 5".

It would have been hard to find an older-looking signing than Denton, though he does bring the average age of our team down to 34.

I bet Dagenham are wondering how we are going to play on Saturday. Bet they're sick of watching possession football and the ball never leaving the ground.

A few other titbits.
We are trying to re-sign Gboly and Gozie has been transfer listed.

He must be 75 now Denton scores though

Well I can't see a role for Gozie now and to be fair he hasn't shown any form since his return from injury. Maybe Woking, who are top of National South would swap Kane Ferdinand for him. He's younger than most of our players, but he's past his best ...... and even then he is better than our midfielders.

Nobody seems to want Gboly - Forest, Northampton, MKD. Would he simply be far too quick for our team ....... or might he be the only one quick enough to get to the hoofballs Denton knocks on?

Doesn't it just look too much like desperation to you? Two months ago MA was telling us Gozie would rip the league apart. As to wingers, we might have got Ky Marsh-Brown from Whitehawk who is just as fast and scores a few goals, or Matty Briggs from Dorking, who scores most weeks and who would have been ours, but we go for a season-long loan on a player his club can't wait to be rid of ............ I'm beginning to think MA may have lost the plot.

When we played Alfs pre season Denton was unplayable. He bossed everything in the air, holding play up and laying balls off. He even scored a good goal with a shot. Lets see how it works out.
Not sure I like the sound of Gboly coming back, they never seem as good second time around and his crossing wasn't exactly good. We need somebody in midfield who can tackle and to put their foot on the ball and pick out a pass or run with it like Morsy did. Without that it looks like its going to be a lot of wing play with a big lump in the middle. This league is made for it.

RE: Big Signing - WakeyTerrier - 12-09-2018

Denton used to play for us, well I say play..apparently he was on the piss all the time and was signed by Stan Ternant who didn't even bother to scout him. Rumour was at the time that other clubs were after him so we just made a offer (£100k?) on the strength of that.

RE: Big Signing - Devongone - 12-09-2018

Bobs says Gboly turned us down, but they said that about Denton about 15 seconds before he signed .....

While its commendable that MA is actually trying to address our problems its also worrying that he is having to re-think his team and tactics at such an early stage .It suggests his judgement was poor, particularly the 'bigging' up of all his signings and Gozie in particular .

I agree, though I must admit I thought Gozie was going to be the centre point of a new goalscoring attack too. I thought he might get 10 or 12 himself and if we can sign other players with a few goals in them that things would be looking up.
